MADALAFINE: The US Food and Drug Administration has ordered the removal of a tablet of Viagra from its prescription drug list, saying the drug was "alarming and possibly fatal" to the man suffering from erectile dysfunction. "The FDA is in the process of issuing a warning to patients that the product is potentially dangerous," said Dr. Steven Nissen, the FDA's deputy commissioner. "We are going to investigate and provide appropriate treatment options for men suffering from erectile dysfunction."
Viagra, which has been the subject of a number of studies in the past, has been linked to more than one fatal side effect, according to Nissen. He noted that "there was no consistent association between sildenafil and death, nor was there a strong correlation between sildenafil and any of the reported side effects," including "severe headaches, flushing, nasal congestion, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, tachycardia, dizziness, and tachycardia."
Nissen also said the FDA has found no evidence to support a link between sildenafil and cardiac events such as a heart attack or angina.
"We do know that sildenafil has been shown to have the potential to have serious, life-threatening consequences, and that sildenafil can have serious, life-threatening consequences in patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease," said Nissen.
"In this instance, the FDA has requested a review of our review of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) safety, efficacy, and quality-of-life statements issued by our oncologists and patients to help ensure that this product is safe and appropriate for use."

Viagra, known generically as sildenafil, is the brand name for the drug tadalafil. It is taken to treat erectile dysfunction. It is also prescribed to improve sexual performance and desire in men with both ED and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
The FDA's review of the manufacturer's statement on the product indicates that the drug was not effective and may have been unsafe.
"We are reviewing the FDA's review of the manufacturer's statement and reviewing the product's safety, efficacy, and quality," said the FDA. "This review may not reflect the safety and efficacy of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, or any other similar indication."
According to the FDA, "the FDA's review of the manufacturer's statement reveals the potential risk to patients of adverse events and the potential for serious side effects.
PURCHASTA, Ind. — A former army sergeant from the Philippines may soon be forced to undergo a Viagra prescription test to get the medicine that helps with erectile dysfunction, an FDA official told a news conference Wednesday.
In a rare interview, the man asked the doctor if he could prescribe the drug for his erectile dysfunction.
“I want the drug to be safe and effective,” the doctor said.
The FDA rejected the request and sent a letter to the doctor demanding the test be performed.

Pfizer’s drug, the impotence drug Levitra, was pulled from the market last month after U. S. regulators warned it could cause a “serious, potentially life-threatening drug reaction.”
Pfizer said it will update doctors on its safety and efficacy of Viagra.
The FDA has not said how long the men will remain in the VIP room.
The FDA is also considering whether the men in the room with a blue pill should be given other drugs to treat erectile dysfunction.
“I’m concerned that this could have an adverse effect on patients,” the FDA said.
